James Ambrose Johnson Jr. Rick James, beter bekend onder zijn artiestennaam Rick James (New York City, 1 februari 1948 - Los Angeles, 6 augustus 2004) was een Amerikaans zanger, muzikant, producer en songwriter. James, geboren en getogen in Buffalo, New York, begon zijn muzikale carrière in zijn tienerjaren. Eind jaren 1960 verhuisde hij naar Californië, waar hij verschillende rock- en funkgroepen startte met wisselend succes.

Nadat hij in 1977 in zijn geboorteplaats Buffalo de lokaal populaire Stone City Band had opgericht, vond James eindelijk succes als artiest nadat hij had getekend bij Motown's Gordy Records, waar hij in 1978 zijn eerste album uitbracht als Rick James: "Come Get It!", waarmee hij de hits "You & I" en "Mary Jane" produceerde. In 1981 bracht James zijn meest succesvolle album uit, Street Songs, met carrièrebepalende hits als "Give It to Me Baby" en "Super Freak", zijn grootste crossover-single, een mix van elementen van funk, disco, rock en new wave. Rapper MC Hammer samplede James' "Super Freak" voor zijn hit "U Can't Touch This" uit 1990, die in 1991 de Best R & B Song won bij de Grammy Awards. James ontving zijn enige Grammy voor het componeren van dit nummer. Rick James stond ook bekend om zijn soulvolle ballads zoals "Fire & Desire" en "Ebony Eyes".
