Toen de eerste versie van deze indrukwekkende boxset in 1991 werd uitgebracht (onder de titel 'Forty Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett'), markeerde het de kroon op Tony Bennett's opmerkelijke terugkeer naar de voorgrond. Het keek terug op een erfenis die vaak overschaduwd werd door de enormiteit van Sinatra. Deze verzameling volgde zorgvuldig zijn carrière, beginnend met zijn eerste Columbia-record, 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', in 1950, en liep door tot 1972 met een mix van hit singles en zorgvuldig geselecteerde albumtracks.

Na het lenen van drie nummers van het Tony Bennett/Bill Evans-project uit 1975 (waaronder een prachtige versie van 'Some Other Time' met een introductie van 'Peace Piece' door Evans), sprong de box 11 jaar vooruit om Bennett's onwaarschijnlijke wederopstanding als een icoon voor de cynische jongeren te overdenken.

Hier onderscheidt 'Fifty Years' zich van zijn voorganger door een vijfde schijf toe te voegen, met 23 tracks, waardoor het totale aantal van 87 naar 110 tracks stijgt. Bennett's onverwachte populariteit in de jaren '90 en 2000 wordt verkend met een reeks Grammy-winnaars, waaronder nummers van 'Perfectly Frank' uit 1993, 'Steppin' Out' uit 1994, 'MTV Unplugged', 'Bennett Sings Ellington: Hot and Cool' uit 1999, en 'A Wonderful World' uit 2002, om er maar een paar te noemen.

Bennett's vroege platen hebben bijna een operatische feel, met een honingzoete Italiaanse tenor die opbouwt naar dramatische climaxen. Maar zijn stem ontplooit zich uiteindelijk tot een uitbundige, levenvierende bariton. Tegen de jaren '80 komt de stem opnieuw naar voren, maar dan als een donkerdere, zachtere en zelfs wat schorre versie van zichzelf.
